TDK has introduced the PFE1500FB, a third-generation series of 1,500 W-rated AC-DC power modules from its TDK-Lambda brand.

The modules accept a wide 85 to 305 VAC input range, enabling them to operate on a 277 VAC nominal input commonly found in North American industrial, lighting, and building automation installations.

The series targets applications including test and measurement equipment, semiconductor manufacturing tools, LED displays, lasers, and RF power amplifiers. The power modules are suitable in environments where operating conditions are demanding and reliable, and high-density power conversion is non-negotiable.

Built for Environments Where Air Cooling Falls Short

The PFE1500FB represents the third iteration of TDK-Lambda's wide-range AC-DC platform at the 1,500 W power level. While previous generations primarily addressed standard rack-mounted and forced-air-cooled deployments, this generation emphasizes flexibility in thermal management, giving system designers more options for integrating modules into enclosures and environments that limit or eliminate conventional airflow.

The PFE1500FB’s central design feature is its metal baseplate, which supports operation in environments where convection or forced-air cooling is either impractical or entirely unavailable. The modules can be mounted directly inside sealed outdoor enclosures or integrated into liquid-cooled systems, opening up deployment scenarios in harsh outdoor installations and industrial settings that previous air-cooled modules could not reliably serve.

A five-sided metal case further simplifies thermal management while reducing radiated electromagnetic interference (EMI), two persistent challenges in industrial power module design that often force engineers into trade-offs between power density and regulatory compliance.

The output voltage is adjustable between 38.4 V and 57.6 V, and the modules include an auxiliary output rated at 9.5 to 14 V at 200 mA for powering ancillary circuitry, such as fans or control boards. No-load power consumption sits at just 2 W when the output voltage is disabled, useful for systems that spend extended periods in standby mode.

For installations requiring more than 1,500 W, the modules support droop-mode current sharing for parallel operation, programmable via PMBus. This allows multiple PFE1500FB units to be combined into higher-power configurations while maintaining load balance across modules.

At 230 VAC input, the PFE1500FB achieves a typical efficiency of around 92%, reflecting the trade-offs inherent in baseplate-cooled designs, where thermal dissipation pathways differ from forced-air architectures. The wide input voltage range makes the module compatible with single-phase power systems across global voltage standards, reducing the number of module variants that system integrators need to stock and maintain in their supply chains.

Specifications and Compliance

Physically, the PFE1500FB measures 157.2 mm x 89.9 mm x 15.2 mm and weighs approximately 540 g. No doubt these are compact dimensions relative to its 1,500 W power output, reflecting the density advantages of baseplate thermal design. Electrical isolation ratings include 3,000 VAC from input to output, 2,500 VAC from input to ground, and 1,500 VDC from output to ground.

The modules are certified to IEC, UL, CSA, and EN 62368-1 safety standards and carry both CE and UKCA marks, covering low voltage, EMC, and RoHS requirements. With external filtering, the PFE1500FB complies with EN 55032 Class A emissions standards and meets IEC 61000-4 immunity requirements. TDK-Lambda offers a three-year warranty for the series.

The combination of wide input range, baseplate cooling flexibility, and a compact form factor positions the PFE1500FB for a growing segment of industrial and outdoor power applications.

As more equipment moves into sealed outdoor enclosures, liquid-cooled cabinets, and other environments where conventional forced-air cooling is either insufficient or impossible, the demand for baseplate-cooled modules at this power level continues to grow. The PFE1500FB addresses that need without compromising on power density, isolation performance, or global compliance, even at the 1,500 W class.
