Google Gobbles More Power Infrastructure for Its Data Centers

Google’s parent company, Alphabet, has made a $4.75 billion deal to acquire a data center and energy infrastructure business.

Google’s quest for data centers and the energy to power them continues as the tech giant’s parent company, Alphabet, has paid $4.75 billion to acquire Intersect, a data center and energy infrastructure developer. The deal includes assuming Intersect’s existing debt.

Alphabet states the move will accelerate its data center development and generation capacity to come online faster. Intersect specializes in co-locating industrial operations and dedicated energy sources, including gas and renewable energy. Google has held a minority stake in Intersect since 2024 after an $800 million investment.

Alphabet-Intersect Agreement Details

Under the agreement, Alphabet and Intersect will operate separately, with Intersect CEO Sheldon Kimber leading the company. The two companies will work jointly on projects, such as its data center site under development in Haskell County, Texas.

Google already owns two data centers in Texas and has invested $40 billion in cloud and AI infrastructure, including the Haskell data center and another campus in Armstrong County.

Intersect will retain its assets in Texas and California. These will operate as a separate company, funded by investors Climate Adaptive Infrastructure, TPG Rise Climate, and Greenbelt Capital Partners.

Intersect will continue to research emerging technologies to support Google’s data center efforts and diversify the energy supply.

Google Grabs More Power in Georgia

In Georgia, the Georgia Public Service Commission approved a 50% increase in power capacity to enable the utility company, Georgia Power, to meet AI data center power demand. The $16.3 billion project will add 10 GW of capacity—enough to power 4 million homes—but data centers will use about 80% of the energy.

Google already operates one data center campus in Douglas County, Georgia. In late 2025, the company spent $42 million on nearly 1,000 acres in Monroe County in Central Georgia for another massive development. Several other tech companies also have data center locations in Georgia, including Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services.

Georgia regulators say that tech companies will pay most of the costs and that residential bills could decrease, but many residents are doubtful.

 

Google’s Data Center Boom

Google currently operates about 30 data centers worldwide, with 15 more under construction or in development, not including those in planning stages, such as the Monroe County project. Other planned data centers include three facilities in Texas, one in West Memphis, Arkansas, and a $2 billion data center campus in Northeast Indiana.

Additional energy moves from Google in 2025 included:

  • Solar and battery storage plant co-located with three data centers in Texas
  • A 25-year agreement with NextEra Energy for nuclear power from the restarted Duane Arnold nuclear plant in Iowa
  • Modernizing a hydropower plant in the PJM grid area

As data centers proliferate worldwide, Google and other tech giants are scrambling to secure energy infrastructure, including diversified generation sources and increased grid capacity.
