GM Fuel Cell Powers Tribeca Drive-In Theater

May 09, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

General Motors Corp. (GM, Detroit, MI) announced that Manhattan’s Tribeca Film Festival's Drive-In Theater was hosted and powered by GM and its hydrogen-powered stationary fuel cell. Using 2000 psi hydrogen tanks, the actual fuel cell stack is the same stack that's used in GM's fuel cell research vehicles.

According to GM engineers, the unit can produce a peak output of 75 kW, and the fuel cell was tied into the theater's parallel grid with a generator to contribute overall power. The line voltage is 480 ac, which is stepped up from the fuel cell's mid 200 Vdc.
