Wide-Input Advanced PWM Controller Added by Intersil

January 08, 2006 by Jeff Shepard

Intersil Corp. has added the ISL6420A, a wide-input advanced PWM (pulse width modulation) controller, targeted at a range of applications (5V and 12V intermediate bus voltages) including industrial, medical and consumer electronics applications with high input voltage.

"With programmable switching frequency, programmable soft start, external compensation and two package choices, Intersil's ISL6420A provides high flexibility for the designer," said Sarika Arora, marketing manager of Intersil's Power Management group. "It also integrates control, output adjustment, monitoring and protection features into a single package."

The ISL6420A provides programmable switching frequency from 100 kHz to1.4 MHz. The output voltage of the converter can be precisely regulated as low as 0.6V, with a maximum tolerance of plus or minus 1.0 percent over temperature and line voltage variations. The PWM duty cycle ranges from 0 percent to 100 percent in transient conditions.

Intersil's ISL6420A has voltage mode control architecture with external compensation for added flexibility and fast transient response. Pgood monitors the output voltage and an external capacitor allows the user to delay Pgood and eliminates the need for an extra supervisory IC on the board.

This device features an external reference voltage tracking mode for externally referenced buck converter application and DDR (double data rate) termination supplies, as well as a voltage margining mode for system testing in networking DC/DC converter applications. The ISL6420A starts up in a pre-biased load and includes protection features like over-voltage, over-current, under-voltage lock-out and over-temperature shutdown. The error amplifier features a 15 MHz gain-bandwidth product and 6V/µs slew rate that enables high converter bandwidth for fast transient response.

The ISL6420A is available now in 20-lead QFN and QSOP packages and is priced at $1.39 in 1,000-unit quantities.
