Tyco Announces New Surge Suppression Devices For High Data Rate Telecom and Datacom Equipment

December 16, 2007 by Jeff Shepard

Tyco Electronics has announced the addition of new devices to its Raychem™ brand SiBar™ thyristor series. These new bi-directional transient voltage surge suppressors include an expanded range of available voltages, and lower capacitance to help protect high-speed ADSL/VDSL modems, Ethernet and Power-over-Ethernet and other high data rate communications equipment from damage from overvoltage events.

Compliant with major standards such as GR-1089 Core, ITU K.20/K.21, IEC61000-4-5, FCC part 68, and UL60950, the new SiBar thyristors provide fast, bi-directional protection in industry standard surge current families of 50A, 80A and 100A (10/1000µs). Key device parameters include voltage ranges from 6 to 400V, capacitance values as low as 12pF, maximum leakage current of only 2µA and a minimum hold current of 150mA. The devices are housed in surface-mount SMB (JEDEC DO-214AA) and SMA (JEDEC DO-214AC) package options.

SiBar thyristors help protect sensitive telecom and datacom equipment from damage resulting from overvoltage events, including lightning transients, and operate as shunt devices in response to a surge that exceeds the breakover voltage. When the voltage exceeds the breakover voltage the SiBar device "folds back", creating a low-impedance path, effectively shorting out the overvoltage condition. The SiBar device remains in this low-impedance state until the current through the device is decreased below its hold rating. After an overvoltage event has passed, it resets to its high-impedance state and allows for normal system operation. In addition to resettable functionality, SiBar devices offer a small form factor, low on-state power dissipation, and accurate foldback voltage shunting. The new low-capacitance offering also makes these devices suitable for high data rate circuits.

Helpful in protecting communications network equipment, including analog and digital linecards, xDSL and ISDN modems, set-top boxes, T1 equipment and Voice over IP (VoIP) equipment, the RoHS-compliant devices are compatible with lead-free solders and high-volume assembly processes.

The devices are priced at $0.15 – $0.42 each in 10k volumes, with a delivery time of 8 – 10 weeks ARO.
