Payton Planar Magnetics Introduces Line of Low Profile PFC Inductors

August 15, 2010 by Jeff Shepard

According to Payton Planar Magnetics, the demand for low profile, high efficiency, boost inductors, is driving the need for high performance planar inductors to be used in power converters for the flat screen industry. The low profile restriction for components needed in the flat screen industry has challenged Payton to develop a standard line of 8mm height pfc inductors.

Payton’s 300µH/6A (35 x 35 x 8mm) is used in PFC boost pre-regulators at over 200W. The peak current is 6A at 120khz, and the inductance is 300µH. The total power losses are under 2.5W with 45°C temperature rise with no additional cooling. The efficiency of this magnetic is the 99% range. Models are available with a separate bias winding, lower and higher inductance with appropriate currents. The parts can be used without a heatsink.
