Broadband TelCom Power Announces SQ Series Converters

March 17, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Broadband TelCom Power (BTCPower, Santa Ana, CA) announced a new series of metal-shielded, low-profile 100W quarter-brick dc/dc converters, called the BTCPower SQ Series. The SQ Series is designed with a six-sided metal shield that the company claims prevents EMI. The shield also acts as a heat-dissipating medium. The devices, which measure 0.34", deliver 20A with 90 percent efficiency at 5A. They feature a power density of 90W per cubic-inch, with 2:1 input voltage range and an industry-standard footprint of 2.30" x 1.45". Operating temperature range is -40 to 100 degrees C, and the devices do not require either heatsink or forced-air cooling. The SQ Series is suitable for use in devices which require distributed high-energy power in the telecommunications industry.

“The efficiency of this model is as good or better than any other high-efficiency quarter-brick in the marketplace," said James Lau, president of BTCPower. “The SQ Series will dissipate heat at two to three times the rate of competitive quarter-bricks with just a single base-plate metal surface. This is due to our large surface area from the six-sided heat-conducting metal case. Furthermore, when compared to quarter-bricks without metal base plates the SQ Series dissipates heat at least five times the rate." He added, “The SQ Series of quarter-bricks is a natural progression of the high-efficiency BTCPower S-series brick and SHB-series quarter brick technologies."

The BTCPower SQ Series quarter-brick is priced at $85 each in large quantities.
