QinetiQ Awarded Contract to Develop Hydrogen Fuel Cell

October 26, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Camera company Olympus has signed up with British researchers at QinetiQ (UK) to develop fuel cell technology for its camera range. The contract is to develop a 10 W fuel cell by 2008, and then extend the technology to cover as many Olympus products as possible. Mobile phones and PDAs typically consume about 2 W, but the power demands of Olympus' main product line of cameras are higher. The key focus of the contract will be to develop hydrogen fuel cells, rather than the more common methanol-based systems currently being developed and used.

QinetiQ Security and Commercial Ventures Managing Director Hal Kruth said, "QinetiQ is delighted that Olympus has recognized British expertise in this field. As consumer technologies converge, this research could have a far-reaching impact."
