XP Power Active Filter Protects DC-DC Converters To Military Specifications Without Additional Components

September 16, 2007 by Jeff Shepard

XP Power announced the availability of its new 500W active filter unit for use in harsh electrical environments. The DSF500 is designed to protect dc-dc converters from the surges, spikes and ripples that are typically found on the electrical system of any military platform, such as an aircraft or vehicle. The filter meets the military specification, MIL-STD 1275A-D, without the need to incorporate any additional components.

Platform mounted systems can utilize standard industrial dc-dc converters without the risk of failure or damage due to supply transients and noise. Input voltage is within the range 10-34 Vdc. Output voltage is tracked and clamped to below 36Vdc.

The DSF500’s low loss, MOSFET-based protection circuit ensures that the unit can provide continuous reverse voltage protection. Attached systems are protected from incorrect, potentially damaging, electrical supply connections. The filter also protects against over current conditions. Should the demand exceed 28A, a warning signal is given that can be used either to disable the DSF500 or turn off the attached devices in order to reduce the current. A disable function allows the system designer to turn off the unit remotely if required.

The unit measures 2.28 x 2.28 x 0.65 inches (57.90 x 57.90 x 16.45 mm). The company states that it believes that no other competitor produces an active filter in such a small package that meets MIL-STD 1275A-D and can deliver 28A. Compliance to electro-magnetic immunity MIL-STD 461E specification can also be achieved by following steps detailed in an applications note available from XP Power.

The DSF500 is priced at $234 each in OEM quantities.
