Vishay Intros New Rectifiers and TVS in SMP Package

December 09, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Vishay Intertechnology Inc. (Malvern, PA) launched a new package for its rectifier and transient voltage suppressor (TVS) products that delivers the same current and power ratings as the SMA package in a 44% smaller footprint. Devices in the new SMP package handle up to 2 A while delivering industry-record levels of thermal resistance.

More than 45 new semiconductor devices are being released in the new SMP package, and include Schottky, standard and ultra-fast rectifiers as well as TVS products. The new devices are aimed at power supply and power conversion applications in desktop and notebook PCs, servers, disk drives, mobile phones, PDAs, hybrid ICs, and automobile electronic sensors and control units.

The Schottky rectifiers in the SMP package are designed for secondary rectification of ac-dc and dc-dc converters, freewheeling and polarity protection, and can handle voltages from 20 V to 40 V, and maximum currents of 1 A (SS1P3L and SS1P4L) and 2 A (SS2P2, SS2P3, SS2P4, SS2P2L and SS2P3L). The standard rectifiers (S1PA through S1PJ) can handle 1 A and 50 V to 600 V of power, making them suitable for general-purpose rectification, polarity protection and rail-to-rail protection in automotive applications.

With 1 A and 50 V to 200 V capabilities, the new ultra-fast rectifiers offer a choice of recovery times as fast as 15 ns for computers and other consumer electronics applications (ES1PA through ES1PD) or low leakage currents for the high-temperature automotive environment (ESH1PA through ESH1PD).

The new TVS devices in the SMP package can handle up to 400 W with breakdown voltages from 13 V to 43 V. The single-chip, SMP package features solder pads that are compatible with other SMD devices. Typical junction-to-case thermal resistance for all of the new products is a low 20 °C/W.

Measuring 1 mm x 2 mm x 3.8 mm, samples and production quantities of the SMP-packaged rectifiers and TVS are available now with lead times of six weeks for larger orders. Pricing for US delivery ranges from $65 to $80 per 1,000 units.
