TI Announces New TPS4000x DC/DC Controllers

June 09, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Texas Instruments Inc. (TI, Dallas, TX) announced its new TPS4000x family of low-voltage, pulse-width-modulated (PWM), synchronous, dc/dc controllers, which provide an advanced solution for distributed power and point-of-load regulation in a wide range of systems. The new devices are the first in a series of controllers for use by digital signal processor (DSP) and microprocessor cores, supervisory circuits, ASICs, FPGAs and other low-voltage logic in advanced systems.

The TPS4000x controllers feature patented, predictive, gate-drive technology, which is designed to provide the highest efficiency in rectifier control by driving MOSFET power transistors at two to four percent greater efficiency than conventional adaptive gate-drive technology, and achieves overall converter efficiencies greater than 95 percent. Two internally fixed operating frequencies are available, at 300kHz and 600kHz, as well as source and source/sink options. A programmable, closed-loop, soft start; short-circuit disable; and thermal shutdown provide protection for system circuitry.

Available in a small-form-factor, 10-pin, MSOP, PowerPad package with thermal protection, the devices supply output voltages down to 0.7V with a precision reference of one percent. The TPS4000x controllers supply step-down input voltages ranging from 2.25V to 5.5V, and are capable of driving both upper and lower n-channel MOSFET output transistors, providing flexibility and efficiency for power supply design.

The TPS4000x dc/dc controllers are available now. Pricing is $1.44 each in quantities of 10,000.
