SiC MOSFETs and Digital Control enable Isolated 1U 11kW Bidirectional DC-DCs

October 28, 2018 by Paul Shepard

TDK Corporation has announced the introduction of the TDK-Lambda brand EZA11K-320240 bi‑directional dc-dc converters, suitable for use with energy storage systems. Rated at 11kW, this 1U high product will operate off a 240- to 400-Vdc source from a high-voltage grid and provide 150- to 300-Vdc for charging lithium-ion batteries.

When grid power is not available, the converter will seamlessly transition to drawing stored energy from the batteries to deliver dc power back to the grid. The EZA11kW is designed for use in cost-saving peak demand storage systems, emergency back-up power and recycling waste motor braking energy.

Other applications include battery testing, HVDC facilities and the utilization of regenerated energy from robots, cranes, autonomous ground vehicles and lifts.

The compact EZA11kW measures just 43.6mm high, 422.8mm wide and 530mm deep, and has the highest power density for an isolated bi-directional converter in the industry. Up to five converters can be connected in parallel for larger scale systems. The use of digital control techniques, SiC MOSFETs and low loss core technology allows the converter to operate with efficiencies of up to 95%.

An RS-485 serial communication interface allows remote adjustment of the voltage and current settings, battery / grid under and over voltage levels and monitoring of alarm signals. Serial connection of multiple converters is possible.

The EZA11kW has an input to output isolation of 2,200Vac, an input/output to ground isolation of 2,000Vac and 400Vac for signals to ground.  Safety certifications include UL60950-1, CSA60950-1, EN60950-1 and the product is CE marked to the Low Voltage and RoHS2 Directives.  The product carries a five-year warranty.
