Power Factor 1 Introduces New 8-Pin PFC Controllers

New Products Aug 07, 2006 by Jeff Shepard

Power Factor 1 (PF1) introduced a new generation of PFC controllers that are intended to addresses the challenges power supply designers face in reducing the design time and risk in creating power supplies with active power factor correction while ensuring compliance to regulatory requirements and energy conservation initiatives.

PF1's PF8800 Series of 8-Pin controllers, utilizing PF1's patent pending CPPC technology, provide PFC pre-regulation for power supplies ranging from 75-1000W, featuring Discontinuous Mode operation up to 500W or Continuous Conduction Mode up to 1000W; reduced Harmonic Distortion; and reduced component count while gaining efficiencies in excess of 95% together with power densities consistent with the demands of new generations of active PFC, ac to dc power converters.

"It was critical that our solution be simple and elegant, yet address the efficiency, power density and worldwide compliance requirements of the industry's leading power supply designers," said Mike Kay, CEO of PF1.

The PF8803/2 PFC controller devices are offered in 8-pin SOIC & DIP package options, and can be configured for either DCM or CCM operation. PF1 provides a DCM evaluation board (PF1-500WB) to demonstrate performance of up to 500W, with universal ac Input, Discontinuous Mode, and Boost PFC pre-regulator operation. A CCM evaluation board will be available soon.

The PF8803 and PF8802 devices are available now and are competitively priced at $0.64 in quantities up to 10,000 pieces. The PF1-500WB evaluation board is also available and priced at $150. Samples of the PF8803 and PF8802 are also available.
