Philips Semiconductors Debuts PUCC3801 Controller IC

September 16, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Philips Semiconductors (Eindhoven, The Netherlands) announced the PUCC3801 current-mode PWM controller IC, which is suitable for a range of low-cost applications such as mains adapters for laptop computers, printer power supplies, low-power off-line power supplies, STB power supply units and PDA chargers.

The IC incorporates all control and protection functions required for implementing an off-line continuous-mode flyback or forward converter. It provides for an internal 100kHz fixed-frequency oscillator that removes the need for an external resistor and capacitor network. It also has randomized frequency jitter to reduce EMI and slope compensation, making it suitable for a universal input or wide load range.

Other features include under-voltage, over-voltage and over-current detection with cycle-by-cycle limit. A 15V input clamp protects against excessive chip voltage and high-drive capability, along with an error amplifier with external compensation pin, and an internal bandgap reference and blanking.

The PUCC3801, in DIP and SO8, is quoted at $0.53 each, in quantities of 10,000.
