MCG Surge Protection Presents MCG 400 Series Devices

New Products Jun 12, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

MCG Surge Protection Inc. (Deer Park, NY) presented its new MCG 400 Series surge suppressor devices for OEM protection that provide surge protection to equipment with both ac or dc input power. The 400 Series is nominally characterized for standard ac power lines.

The MCG 400 Series features a maximum continuous operating Vac of 120% of the rated line voltage; a response time of <5 nsec; L-N, L-G and N-G modes of protection; a surge current (820 µs) of 10 kA (one event), 2 kA (100 events), 1 kA (1,000 events) and 500 A (10,000 events); green LED status indicators; an operating altitude of 13,000 ft (4,000 m); an operating/storage temperature range from -40 °C to +70 °C/-40 °C to +85 °C; a high-impact plastic enclosure with dimensions of 4.95 in x 2.85 in x 1.25 in; a 4.20 in x 2.25 in mounting; and a weight of <1 lb (0.45 kg).

When using one of the 400 Series surge suppressors, it important to allow for the possible variations from nominal voltage and the peak value of the line voltage. To avoid repeated stressing of the suppressor, select a unit with 180 Vac as the clamping value. When the 400 Series suppressor is used with a dc input, clamping will not begin until the 180 Vac level is reached (or 254 Vdc). As the suppressor is designed to work with ac, the clamping level on negative excursions is the same as for the positive side (180 Vac, or 254 Vdc), and the only protection against small negative spikes will be the attenuation provided by the internal low pass filter.

The MCG 400 Series surge protectors offer a 10-year, no-nonsense warranty. For a quote request, contact the company.
