Maxim 2A Synchronous Buck Converters Integrate MOSFETs in 1.6 by 1.6mm Package

New Products Feb 13, 2011 by Jeff Shepard

Maxim Integrated Products introduced the MAX15053, a current-mode, synchronous dc-dc converter in a tiny 1.65 x 1.65mm wafer-level package (WLP). This miniature step-down regulator integrates MOSFETs to simplify design, minimize EMI, and save board space while achieving conversion efficiency up to 96% at full load (2A).

The MAX15053 operates from a fixed 1MHz switching frequency that allows for small external passive components and an all-ceramic-capacitor design, further minimizing total solution size. A peak-current-mode architecture ensures excellent load regulation while simplifying compensation. Offering both fixed-PWM and skip-mode operation, the MAX15053 is suitable for applications ranging from telecom, networking, and base-station equipment to portable devices such as notebooks.

Other features include an enable input and power-good indicator for power sequencing, adjustable soft-start for controlled turn-on, and the ability to safely start up into a prebiased output.

The MAX15053 operates from a 2.7 to 5.5V input voltage and provides ±1% output-voltage accuracy over temperature. The device is fully specified over the -40 to +85°C extended temperature range. Prices start at $1.38 (1000-up, FOB USA).
