Kemet Adds Supercaps and Supercap Modules

New Products Nov 21, 2013 by Jeff Shepard

KEMET Corporation announced the release of large cell supercapacitors and supercapacitor Modules. This new series of capacitor technologies is designed to meet the growing power management needs of the transportation, industrial, medical and consumer markets. Supercapacitors are offered with voltage ratings of 2.7 Vdc and capacitances up to 3,000 F. Supercapacitor modules are offered with voltage ratings up to 80 Vdc, capacitances up to 500 F and maximum stored energy ratings up to 54.1Wh. Typical applications include power bridging, energy harvesting as well as an alternative for battery back-up.

"These devices are an excellent complement to the small form factor supercapacitors we released in September," said Per Loof, KEMET Chief Executive Officer. "The availability of these new supercapacitors through our 'Easy-To-Buy-From' model is another example of why our customers consider us the Electronic Components Company."

The S501 and S301 series supercapacitors use a proprietary electrode design to deliver a very high power density. The S501 series delivers 100 to 600 F in a single ended, board mountable, snap-in termination construction and offers a cycle life of greater than 500,000 cycles (to half rated voltage). The S301 Series offers 650 to 3,000 F in a weldable axial screw termination cell and has a rated cycle life over one million cycles. Both devices are rated for operation from -40 to +70 degrees C with a rated voltage of 2.7Vdc and a surge capability of 2.85 Vdc.

The S01 series supercapacitors are bank modules in which the cells are encased in a plastic holder. They feature working voltages from 16 to 80 Vdc, individually-balanced cells and are IP-54 rated. They can be ordered with an optional voltage and over temperature signal output. Models are available with capacitances from 12 to 58 F and maximum stored energy of 10.6 to 2.1 Wh.

The S02 series supercapacitors are bank modules in extruded metal holders for applications requiring an IP-65 rating (IP-67 is available as an option). These modules deliver 16 to 48 Vdc and feature individually-balanced cells, threaded, protected terminals and an optional state of charge indicator. S02 modules are offered with capacitance ratings from 165 to 500 F and have maximum stored energy ranges from 54.1 to 18.2 Wh. Both the S01 and S01 modules are rated for operation from -40 to +65 degrees C and have a cycle life of over 500,000 cycles.
