IXYS Introduces New Generation Of Ultrafast Recovery Diodes In 200 To 400V Range

March 01, 2009 by Jeff Shepard

IXYS Corp. announces the expansion of its new generation of ultrafast recovery diodes called the HiPerFRED2 ™ family. These new products are produced in IXYS own wafer plant, utilizing proprietary and advanced processing technology that optimizes the fast switching speed of the diode with low forward voltage drop (Vf) and no "snappiness" for 200, 300 and 400V ratings. These products set new standards for improved efficiency in Power Systems, to reduce the energy losses in power conversion applications.

The HiPerFRED2 ™ diode family is well suited for power applications with high switching frequencies (20-200 kHz) and especially in boost and free wheeling configurations such as in Power Factor Correction (PFC) circuits and Switch Mode Power Supplies (SMPS). All of these will benefit from the optimized characteristics of small reverse recovery current (IRR) and small stored charge (QRR), as well as a soft recovery. The results are reduced energy losses for the diode as well as for the switching transistor in the power circuit. An added benefit of the soft recovery of these diodes in turn off, is the minimized EMI noise they generate in switching and the elimination of the need to add costly snubber circuitry for the switching transistors.

The voltage ratings of these fast diodes make them well suited for applications in Hybrid and Electrical cars and vehicles.

The HiPerFRED2 ™ family have a Vrrm rating from 200 to 400V with different current values from 10 up to 60A. More than 40 products are available in various configurations and packages including the isolated ISOPLUS™-packages of IXYS. Some part type examples are DPG10I200PA (10A, 200V); DPG30C300PB (2x 15A, 300V); DPG60I400HA (60A, 400V); DPG120C300QB (2x 60A, 300V) and DPH30IS600HI (30A, 600V (series connected)).
