IR Adds TO-220 Synchronous Rectification MOSFETs

December 15, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

International Rectifier (IR) has introduced high efficiency 75V and 100V HEXFET® power MOSFETs in the TO-220 package that enable a part count reduction of 30% or more in secondary synchronous rectification, full-bridge topology power supplies compared to competing devices in the same package.

The new 75V MOSFETs are designed to shrink circuit size and increase power density in high power server ac-dc switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) with 12V output or in 48V rail ORing circuits. The new 100V devices suit high power flyback secondary rectification or offer enhanced primary-side efficiency in high power telecom isolated 48V dc-dc converters. In addition, the new MOSFETs can be used in stepper motor and brushless dc motor drive applications.

"As the demand for ever-faster data processing continues to increase, information processing systems demand more power. In spite of this, system form factors must remain the same or even shrink. The new 75 and 100V TO-220 HEXFET MOSFETs allow more power management to fit in the same amount of space, and have the lowest device on-resistance among competing MOSFETs," said Stephen Oliver, marketing manager for SMPS Products at International Rectifier.

The IRFB3077PbF is a 75V MOSFET with 3.3mOhm maximum device on-resistance, and enables a 30% parts count reduction (from ten TO-220 devices to seven TO-220 devices), with a reduced PCB area and heatsinking for higher power density in 3kW server SMPS with 12V output.

The IRFB4110PbF is a 100V MOSFET with 4.0mOhm maximum device on-resistance, and can slash component count in half, reducing PCB area and reducing heat sink size.

Pricing for the IRFB4110PbF (100V) is US $2.28 each, while the IRFB3077PbF (75V) is US $1.99 each, both in 10,000-unit quantity. The new synchronous HEXFET MOSFETs are available now. Prices are subject to change. The devices are lead-free (PbF) and are RoHS-compliant.
