November 14, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

From its exhibit booth at Comdex 2000, Electric Fuel Corp. (EFC, Iselin, NJ) is introducing the Instant Power Charger. The new product is an extension of the company's Instant Power line of products that utilizes zinc-air fuel cell technology.

EFC claims that their new Instant Power Charger offers a convenient way to recharge a cellular phone without the need of an electrical outlet. The device gets its energy from its zinc-air PowerCartridge, so consumers can charge their cellular phones anywhere, anytime, allowing them to talk and charge their phones simultaneously.

Each PowerCartridge is designed to provide up to three full charges for the average cellular phone and will support up to 12 hours of talk time and up to three weeks of standby time.

"The Instant Power Charger is expected to be launched in the UK prior to the end of 2000, and will be available at leading retaliers in the US, Europe and Israel by the beginning of 2001," said Yehuda Harats, president and CEO of EFC. "The chargers will initially be compatible with popular models of cellular phones from Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Ericsson, Panasonic, Siemens and Philips."

According to EFC, the Instant Power Charger is lightweight, ultra-compact and easy to use. It will be available for purchase as a complete set, which will include one PowerCartridge, a model-appropriate SmartCord to connect the cartridge to the cellular phone, and an airtight carrying pouch. Additional disposable PowerCartridges will be sold separately.
