DATEL Unveils New A-Series DC/DC Power Converters

May 09, 1999 by Jeff Shepard

DATEL Inc. (Mansfield, MA) announced the new A-Series of dc/dc power converters. They combine a high-frequency (310kHz), high-efficiency (to 88 percent), synchronous-rectifier topology with the newest components and fully automated SMT-on-pcb construction. The models deliver 9W to 15W (up to 6A) from the standard 2" x 1" package. All models deliver their full rated output power over ambient temperature ranges from –40 degrees Celsius to as high as +70 degrees Celsius (model and input voltage dependent) without heat sinks or supplemental forced-air cooling. Devices derate to +100 degrees Celsius.

Output voltages are 1.5V, 1.8V or 2.5V. Input voltage ranges are 10V to 18V (D12 models), 18V to 36V (D24 models) or 36V to 75V (D48 models). All models are fully isolated (1,500Vdc guaranteed), line and load regulated (±0.2 percent maximum and ±0.3 percent maximum, respectively), and thoroughly I/O protected. They feature input pi filters, input under-voltage and over-voltage lockout, input reverse-polarity protection, output over-voltage protection, output current limiting, and continuous short-circuit protection.

Each model in the series offers an optional on/off control function with either positive or negative polarity. The control function can be replaced with a sync function, allowing multiple devices to be run synchronously in order to minimize system noise issues. All models are certified to IEC950, UL1950 and EN60950 safety requirements for operational insulation. D48 models (36V to 75V inputs) are CE marked.

The A-Series power converters are priced at $56 each in singles, and $35 each for 10,000-unit pieces. Production quantities require six to eight weeks.
