Automotive-Grade Monolithic Ceramic Capacitors

New Products Jan 27, 2016 by Jeff Shepard

Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. announced the development and launch of its GRT series of automotive-grade monolithic ceramic capacitors. These capacitors meet the AEC-Q200 reliability test standard requirements established by the Automotive Electronics Council. Applications are expected to include: Infotainment and comfort-and-convenience devices (such as car navigation systems and audio equipment) used in automobiles.

These capacitors are offered with X5, X6, X7 and C0G temperature characteristics with rated voltages from 4- to 100-Vdc. Capacitance deviations offered include ±0.25pF, ±0.5pF±5%, ±10%, and ±20%. Operating temperature ranges include: -55 to +85 degrees C (X5R), -55 to 105 degrees C (X6S) and -55 to 125 degrees C (X7R and C0G). Case sizes offered include 0201, 0402, 0603, 0805, 1206 and 1210.

Murata’s capacitors have been traditionally used in applications in three main fields: general applications, automotive powertrain safety applications, and implanted medical devices. Due to increasing demand the GRT series have been developed for use in the automotive infotainment and comfort-and-convenience industries.

Test conditions for the GRT series devices include: temperature cycling of 1,000 times at a test temperature of 85 degrees C ±2 degrees C and humidity resistance load testing at a humidity of 80 to 85 percent RH for 1,000 hours.

Recent years have witnessed an ever-rising demand for automotive-grade monolithic ceramic capacitors that meet the requirements of the AEC-Q200 automotive electronic component standard, inspiring Murata to develop and commercialize the GRT series. The series consists of capacitors with 299 part numbers for temperature-compensating, and 519 part numbers with a high dielectric constant, for a total of 818 part numbers. These components are designed to enhance reliability and reduce physical sizes for infotainment and comfort-and-convenience applications that are required to meet the AEC-Q200 standard.
