AnalogicTech Adds Dual Slew Rate Controlled Load Switch

October 30, 2007 by Jeff Shepard

Advanced Analogic Technologies Inc. (AnalogicTech) announced the AAT4282A, a new dual, slew rate controlled load switch that is claimed to allow designers to reduce parts count and cost by integrating two low resistance slew rate controlled load switches in a single 2 x 2mm package.

Part of AnalogicTech’s Application Specific Power MOSFET (ASPM) product family, the AAT4282A features two MOSFETs, each with a typical RDS(ON) of just 60mΩ at 5V, to support what is said to be higher load switch current handling capacity with a lower forward voltage drop than single competition devices on the market.

"Slew-rate controlled switches are widely used in portable systems to replace discrete circuitry used to maximize battery efficiency and prolong battery life by turning off loads when not in use," stated Phil Dewsbury, Product Line Director for AnalogicTech. "By offering lower resistance in a dual device than comparable single devices in the same size package, the AAT4282A allows designers to extend battery life by minimizing the voltage drop between the battery and operating system, while reducing component count, minimizing board real estate and driving down cost."

Designed for high side load switching applications, the AAT4282A supports both 3 and 5V systems by operating from a wide 1.5 to 6.5V input range. Quiescent current is a low 1µA. Input logic levels are both TTL and 2.5V to 5V CMOS compatible.

The AAT4282A is available in three versions with different turn-on and turn-off characteristics. The AAT4282A-1 is a slew-rate limited load switch. For high speed switching applications, the AAT4282A-2 offers turn-on capabilities of less than 500ns and turn-off capabilities of less than 3µs typical. AAT4282A-3 adds a minimized slew rate limited turn-on function and a shutdown output discharge circuit to rapidly turn off a load when the switch is disabled.

The AAT4282A also features a slew-rate selector pin which allows the designer to switch between fast and slow slew rates on the same device. This capability simplifies inventory management by allowing designers to use the same device to address two different applications.

Qualified across the -40 to +85°C temperature range, the AAT4282A is available in a Pb-free, 8-pin FTDFN22-8 package. It sells for $1.07 in 1K quantities.
