Chasing the Wind: 7 Innovative Turbine Designs in 2024
In 2024, engineers created unusual turbine designs to harvest wind energy more efficiently.
The traditional three-bladed wind turbine still dominates most wind farms, onshore and offshore, but that model could change. Engineers have developed and refined several unorthodox designs for generating wind energy.
From multiple blades to no blades at all, here are some notable turbine designs from 2024.

Three Blades Are Not Enough
Several developers added blades to their turbines to capture more wind from multiple angles.
1. The X-Rotor uses four blades arranged in a double-V configuration. The X-shape maximizes the swept area for offshore turbines.
2. OceanX doubled up the three-bladed turbine, placing two rotors on one support. It’s the world’s largest dual-rotor offshore wind turbine.
3. The Windcatcher stacks multiple modular turbines to create a wall of wind-catchers. The configuration builds a “wall” of turbines on a floating platform.
4. New World Wind built a wind generator with leaf-like blades. The Aeroleaf turbine resembles a tree.
Who Needs Blades?
A few innovative designs harvested wind energy without traditional blades.
5. Vortex Bladeless is a bladeless tower that generates energy by vibrating in the wind.
6. Airloom uses “wings” that travel around a track like a roller coaster.
Going Natural
Wind turbine towers are typically made of steel, which is carbon-intensive to produce and difficult to transport. Could wood be the answer?
7. Modvian built 150-meter wooden turbines from laminated veneer lumber. Each lightweight turbine can power 400 homes.
