Tridonic and NMB-Minebea to Provide Intelligent Lighting Solutions for Smart Cities

November 13, 2019 by Paul Shepard

Tridonic and NMB-Minebea-GmbH have signed a contract to form a strategic partnership. The partnership aims to develop intelligent outdoor lighting solutions for smart cities. In the image above, wireless modules connect the street lamps with each another and forward the signals. Data security is ensured by encrypted data transfer. Operators can access the system at any time via the Smart City platform and its management portal.

Based on Tridonic's lighting technology and Paradox Engineering's revolutionary connectivity platform and applications ecosystem, the partnership aims to provide integrated Smart City services. For this purpose, hardware and software from both partners will be aligned so that they can easily be operated as a single system.

Together, the technology partners will be able to market integrated Smart City applications. The solution will be completely standard-based, compliant with Zhaga/DALI standards and thus fully scalable and open for self-commissioning.

With Smart Urban Network, Paradox Engineering developed a revolutionary connectivity platform and extensive applications ecosystem. This forms the basis for innovative Smart City services and helps cities solve major urban challenges such as Smart Lighting, Smart Parking and Smart Waste. Tridonic, on the other hand, offers intelligent, efficient and safe outdoor lighting solutions ranging from LED modules and drivers to surge protection devices and sensors.

"More and more cities are transforming into Smart Cities using data and the Internet of Things to develop internet-based services. Luminaires offer the perfect infrastructure for these services: Sensors can easily be integrated and transmit the necessary data for network-based applications. However, what has made the development of Smart City services difficult in the past is that all the components of such a system need to be matched and communicate with one another. Together with MinebeaMitsumi and our technology Partner Paradox Engineering we will be able to offer integrated Smart City solutions on an open standard," explained Thomas Ölz, Vice President Global Marketing Tridonic.

Jens Richter, Managing Director of NMB-Minebea-GmbH added: "Light points and integrated sensors can deliver valuable data for a number of Smart City services. To fulfil their purpose, this data, however, needs to be translated into a universal language and integrated into an appropriate software management system. Our integrated solution with Tridonic's lighting portfolio will be truly flexible and future-proof as we will be committed to open standards and full-scalability. Our joint objective is to help cities solve major urban challenges and needs. For that purpose, we will market a turn-key solution with full flexibility."

Tridonic has been serving the global luminaire market with its lighting and electronics technology for more than 60 years, as the technology company of the Zumtobel Group. Its comprehensive portfolio includes an array of lighting hardware and software for different fields of application. The outdoor lighting portfolio includes LED modules and drivers as well as sensors and surge protection devices.

NMB-Minebea-GmbH is part of the MinebeaMitsumi group, which is a multinational corporation and major producer of machinery components and electronics devices. Paradox Engineering, a MinebeaMitsumi group company, has taken a pioneering role in the fields of network infrastructures and urban applications. Cooperation will enable both companies to further expand their networks and enlarge the fields of application of their products.
