May 24, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Twenty-two solar-powered boats competed in three seperate competitions on May 21-22, 2004, in the second annual Metropolitan Water District (MWD) Solar Cup competition at Lake Skinner in Temecula, CA. The competition started May 21st with opening ceremonies, followed by qualifying events. On May 22nd, the boats raced 200 meters for best time, and the boats also competed in a 90-minute endurance race around a 2 km course.

Each team was judged on reports they submitted to the MWD that explained how they constructed their watercraft. In addition, each team was also given $3,000, pieces of a hull and a 2 in thick manual to help build the craft. The solar-driven crafts raced across the 200-meter course, with top speeds coming in at 13 knots or 15 mph.
