SFC Presents Next Generation Fuel Cell System

May 12, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Smart Fuel Cell GmbH (SFC, Munich, Germany) presented its second prototype direct-methanol fuel cell (DMFC) system, reducing the size of the complete system by more than 50 percent and making it more powerful. With up to 40W, the new prototype provides electric energy for a laptop computer, a printer and a cellular phone (via a USB-port) at the same time. On one single-fuel cartridge containing 125ml of methanol, a laptop can be operated for a full working day. The cartridge can be exchanged in a few seconds even during operation.

SFC Founder and CEO Manfred Stefener stated, “We keep on miniaturizing our systems. This prototype represents the current state-of-the-art in compact DMFC power generators. Preparations for integrated systems – for example, built into consumer electronics products – are progressing rapidly as well. OEMs in this area are enormously interested in our reliable power supply. Reliable power supply is the key to mobile computing and mobile office applications. Our next product generation greatly enhances the user`s flexibility and independence.”
