Sanyo May Intensify Focus On Battery Business

September 17, 2007 by Jeff Shepard

In light of its recent lack luster financial performance, Sanyo Electric Co. is reportedly considering focusing more of its corporate "energies" on developing and expanding its battery business. The company is said to currently control approximately 40% of the global market for lithium-ion batteries, and the battery business is viewed as a positive sector of the company’s otherwise mediocre business performance in recent years.

While moving in the direction of focusing on its battery business, Sanyo is also reportedly making a parallel move to sell its white goods and semiconductor businesses. There have been reports that the company, which has suffered annual net losses for the past three years, is accepting final bids from companies seeking to purchase a majority stake in Sanyo Semiconductor Corp.. According to the rumors, Sanyo is expected to announce on the successful bid by the end of this month.

In a brief comment on the media reports regarding the semiconductor business , Sanyo stated that it is, "... considering all possibilities regarding expanding and enhancing this business. However, at this point, nothing has been officially decided."
