International Hydrail Convention Focuses on Hydrogen Fuel Cells

May 16, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

The first International Hydrail Conference was held in Charlotte, NC. at the Renaissance Charlotte Suites hotel. Officials from all over the world came to the Queen City to discuss using hydrogen fuel cells to power commuter trains. They say that will improve air quality because it is much cleaner than the diesel technology used now.

Japan is already testing hydrogen fuel cells and officials say they hope North Carolina makes history by being the first state to put them to use. "We hope that the line between Mooresville and Charlotte will become the site of the first application here," said Stan Thompson of the Iredell Chamber of Commerce. "That will happen a few years after the line is opened up using new state-of-the-art diesel."
