July 17, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

General Motors Corp. (GM, Detroit, MI) announced that it will participate in a project to demonstrate fuel cell vehicles in Japan. GM will join several other automakers in the Japan Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Demonstration Project to be directed by Japan's Ministry of Economy.

The project's goal is to better understand fuel cell technology and how to create a hydrogen infrastructure. Public education regarding fuel cell technology will also be a part of the project, for which GM will bring its Opel (Germany) Zafira-based HydroGen3 fuel cell vehicle to Japan.
