eVionyx Demos Metal-Air Fuel Cell Technology

October 01, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

eVionyx Inc. (Hawthorne, NY) demonstrated its revolutionary power cell (RPC) technology by powering both a golf cart and an electric lawnmower with energy extracted from zinc metal.

The demonstrations are a culmination of an intense research and development program co-funded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC). The demonstration was held at the Rockefeller State Park Preserve in Tarrytown, NY.

The focus of the demonstration was to highlight the ability to provide emission-free power through the use of metal fuel, specifically zinc. The only by-product from zinc is zinc-oxide, a harmless solid material that can be reconverted to metal and recharged. Park officials put the capabilities of the lawnmower and golf cart to practical application during the demonstration.

"The eVionyx metal-air RPC represents a significant breakthrough for zinc-air based technology, which has substantial technological and environmental advantages over competing products," stated Dr. Sadeg Faris, president and chairman of eVionyx.
