Axion Power and ABC enter Technology Assessment Program

April 13, 2016 by Jeff Shepard

Advanced Battery Concepts, LLC (ABC) and Axion Power International, Inc. have teamed in a Joint Technology Assessment Program to assess the performance, efficacy and cost efficiency of using Axion's negative electrode technology and materials in ABC's "GreenSeal®" bipolar battery. ABC's GreenSeal® Batteries are a bi-polar advanced lead acid battery that have been in development for over 5 years and are protected with several global patents.

This technology reduces the lead content of a traditional lead acid battery by over 46% and is fully recyclable. Axion's patented lead carbon battery is the only advanced battery technology with an all carbon negative electrode, producing faster recharge rates, greater charge acceptance, longer life cycles and minimal maintenance.

Axion's Chief Executive Officer, Richard Bogan said, "Axion is pleased to team-up with ABC, on this focused joint R&D effort, to explore the unique power and features of our respective proprietary technologies. Our work together could directly impact new and significant energy storage commercial applications."

ABC's Chief Executive Officer and Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Edward Shaffer said, "We are really excited about this program which will allow us to demonstrate the production readiness of bipolar PbC®batteries in ABC's general purpose modules."

Until now ABC has focused its efforts on lead acid battery technologies. This program is a significant step in applying GreenSeal® technology in other battery chemistries. "Our independent bipolar lead carbon studies have shown significant performance uplifts compared to existing prismatic lead carbon products. Now ABC will be able to clearly demonstrate that this is the case," Shaffer stated.

The main goal of the joint program is to demonstrate the production readiness of bipolar PbC®batteries using ABC's General Purpose 12V 17Ah modules as the demonstration format. In addition the joint testing will measure key performance metrics, develop cost models, and develop rules for designing PbC®products to specification of fitment, voltage, and capacity.
