AES to Develop Mass Production for Fuel Cells

November 10, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

The Technological Research and Development Authority (TRDA, Fort Lauderdale, FL) has awarded Investment Initiative for Energy Technologies (IIET) program funding to Apollo Energy Systems Inc. (AES, Fort Lauderdale, FL). The funding will help Apollo develop methods of economically mass-producing alkaline fuel cells. The IIET program funds small, high-technology, Florida businesses that are commercializing energy-related products and services.

Apollo believes that mass-production battery machinery can be adapted to fuel cell production. Apollo’s research has indicated that fuel cell costs of $50 per kilowatt are possible using these methods. The new production methods to be developed in Florida will be tried out in Apollo’s new fuel cell factory in Cologne, Germany, and later in a fuel cell plant to be built in Florida. TRDA and Apollo believe that this program will result in high-tech jobs, attract new capital investment to Florida and will made Florida a fuel cell industry center.
