Vishay Releases Trench MOS Barrier Schottky Rectifier

December 15, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Vishay Intertechnology Inc. has announced the industry's first Schottky barrier rectifiers based on Trench MOS technology. Useful as a rectification circuit or OR-ing diode in redundant switchmode power supplies, or to replace synchronous rectification solutions, the five new TMBS™ devices feature low forward voltage drops among Schottky rectifiers for their package types.

The first device on the market packaged in a TO-220AB case that is rated for 40 A (2 x 20 A) and 100 V, the VTS40100CT is optimized for 100-W to 300-W high-frequency switchmode power supply applications. Its low typical forward voltage drop of 0.375 V at 5 A and 125 °C reduces conduction power losses. The VTS40100CT can also improve OR-ing diode efficiency in the high-voltage output of redundant switchmode power supplies.

The new V40100P is also rated for 40 A (2 x 20 A) and 100 V, with a TO-247AD case and an even lower typical forward voltage drop of 0.372 V under the same conditions. That forward voltage drop is matched by the V50100P, which also has a TO-247AD case and a higher rating of 50 A (2 x 25 A).

The V30100S and VF30100S are both rated for 30 A (1 x 30 A) and 100 V, with a typical forward voltage drop of 0.385 V at 5 A and 125 °C. The V30100S is packaged in a TO-220AB case and the VF30100S in a fully molded ITO-220AB case.

With their highly efficient switching performance, the new Schottky barrier rectifiers are offered as an alternative to planar Schottky devices. They can also match the efficiency and thermal performance of synchronous rectification solutions, producing a reduced heat sink that results in less heat generated by the power supply. By decreasing the number of parts to accomplish the same functions, they provide space savings, simplified designs and reduced cost.

The new rectifiers are rated for operation over a -20 °C to +150 °C junction temperature range. Applications include switchmode power supplies and power adapters for desktop and notebook PCs, servers, plasma display panel and LCD TVs, and computer monitors. They can also be used for OR-ing diode applications in redundant SMPS for telecom systems.

Samples and production quantities of the rectifiers are available now, with lead times of eight weeks for larger orders. Pricing for U.S. delivery in 1,000-piece quantities starts at $1.00 for the V30100S and VF30100S, $1.50 for the VTS40100CT, $2.00 for the V40100P, and $2.50 for the V50100P.
