Vicor Introduces New PowerStick DC/DC Converter

November 07, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

Vicor Corp. (Andover, MA) has introduced a new power-conversion architecture called PowerStick, specifically designed to address the market for low-profile, high-density, board-mounted dc/dc converters. Featuring an above-board height of 0.35" and a footprint as small as 2.28" x 0.5", PowerStick converters deliver up to 75W per module and up to 900W in fault-tolerant arrays.

Vicor's through-the-board mounting results in a power conversion density of 188W per cubic inch. A wrap-around aluminum body, available in a variety of options, provides integral cooling in a range of applications and thermal environments, allowing customers to achieve peak power density within the 0.35" profile.

All members of the PowerStick family maintain the complete feature set of Vicor second-generation converters. Additionally, PowerSticks are environmentally sealed and encased in aluminum to enhance ruggedness, reliability, electrical shielding and noise performance.

The initial 48V input family of PowerStick dc/dc converters addresses a range of communications, data processing, test equipment and industrial applications.

"The PowerStick has a higher power density and is more cost-effective than competitive products with roughly the same footprint," said Andrew Hilbert, senior director of product marketing at Vicor. "Specifically, PowerStick converters deliver twice the power of 30W to 40W SIP-type packages, and double the power density of larger quarter-brick modules."

The initial 48Vin product offering will provide predefined outputs of 1.5Vdc, 1.8Vdc, 2.0Vdc, 2.5Vdc, 3.3Vdc, 5.0Vdc and 12Vdc. Prices start at $69 per unit in 100-piece quantities.
