UWR 15W A-Series switching dc/dc converters

October 03, 1999 by Jeff Shepard

Datel Inc. (Mansfield, MA) recently announced the new UWR 15W A-Series switching dc/dc converters. Datel claims to guarantee the highest efficiencies (83-86 percent) of any and all products in the 2 x 1 form factor. The company claims the converters are able to deliver 50 to 100 percent more output power than competing devices by combining 300kHz, synchronous-rectifier, forward topology with the newest components. According to Datel, the converters achieve low cost and high reliability by exploiting 100 percent automatically assembled, SMT-on-pcb (including magnetics) assembly techniques. The 12 basic models in the family offer 4 different output voltages (3.3V, 5V, 12V and 15V) and 3 different input ranges (10-18V, 18-36V and 36-75V). They are designed to be fully isolated (1500Vdc guaranteed), line and load regulated (+/-0.2 percent max. and +/-0.3 percent max., respectively), and fully I/O protected. For increased thermal efficiency and ruggedness, the devices are encapsulated with a thermally-conductive potting compound in a UL94V-0 plastic case. Each model in the UWR 15W A-Series offers an optional on/off control function that can be ordered with either positive (high = on) or negative polarity. The control function can be replaced with a sync function. Additionally, an output trim function can be ordered in combination with the control and sync functions. UWR 15W A-Series dc/dc converters are priced at $74 for singles and $47 for 5k pieces with quantity discounts available for OEMs. Evaluation units are available from stock.
