Tyco Offers High Current VRM Connectors

April 24, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Tyco Electronics has announced a new version of its High-Current Card-Edge Connectors designed specifically for use with removable Voltage Regulator Modules (VRM). Initial test results have confirmed these connectors meet the latest INTEL® specification (VRM 10.0) by allowing a continuous 105 amperes of DC current to pass through the connector while remaining within the industry standard 30°C temperature-rise criteria. In addition, because of the increased efficiency of these modules, Tyco Electronics expects this demonstrated performance will extend the connector's use beyond present applications in VRM 8.5, 9.0, 9.1, 10.0 regulators to satisfy VRM 10.1 as well.

Mike Blanchfield, Tyco Electronics Product Manager for the High-Current Card-Edge connectors commented: "This achievement came as a result of improvements made to both the connector contacts and housings. The availability of early VRM 10.0 and 10.1 modules has allowed us to test the connector and module in a real application environment. The High-Current Card-Edge connectors utilize a very high conductivity copper alloy and a high temperature housing to permit single-pass processing of the circuit boards as well as operation in high power density applications."
