Tyco Electronics Unveils 5/12V Version of Lynx POL Converters

New Products May 13, 2007 by Jeff Shepard

Tyco Electronics announced the debut of the 3 and 6A version of the 5/12Vin PicoTLynx converter, the second introduction of the new TLynx Series converter line. The 5/12Vin PicoTLynx converter is designed to provide higher power, higher density, and faster transient response in a wide variety of board mounted power applications.

The 5V/12V PicoTLynx converter series supports a wide input voltage range of 4.5 to 14V and provides a tightly regulated output voltage from 0.59 to 5.5Vdc. The open frame 3 and 6A modules are available in the same physical size, offering scalable solution for intermediate bus architectures (IBA) in high power density applications.

The 5/12V PicoTLynx converter is claimed to offer the same high efficiency as the Lynx series but with significantly improved thermal performance due to innovations in design and packaging. The 6A PicoTLynx converter delivers fully rated output current at 75°C with no airflow, enabling designers to take advantage of the full power capability of this high-density module. In addition, standard features include programmable output voltages, remote on/off, remote sense, Power Good, monotonic start up, over current and over temperature protection. The EZ-SEQUENCE™ feature is available as an option.

The 5/12V PicoTLynx Series converter also offers the new Tunable-Loop (patent pending) feature which allows engineers to optimize the control loop to significantly improve transient response and reduce the amount of external filtering. When the control loop is optimized using the Tunable-Loop feature, load transient response can be improved up to five times (5X) using identical external capacitance. The Tunable-Loop is said to be easy to implement and requires only a minimal set of additional low cost components and no additional pins.

The 5/12V PicoTLynx converter, currently available in a small SMT package measuring only 0.48 x 0.48 x 0.25in (12.2mm x 12.2mm x 6.25mm) (3A version), features the LGA (Land-Grid-Array) interconnect method. Supporting an industrial operation temperature range of -40 to +85°C, the modules meet EU Directive 2002/95/EC RoHS initiatives as well as industry standard board cleaning processes.

"The PicoTLynx converter, with the patented Tunable-Loop feature, enables engineers to optimize the module and take advantage of faster transient response for end user applications" said Sabi Varma, General Manager at Tyco Electronics’ Power Systems business. "We consistently strive to solidify our leadership position in developing a breadth of products that increases value to our users."
