August 17, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Tyco Electronics Power Systems Inc. (Dallas, TX) announced its new KW010, KW015, KW020 and KW025™ Series of sixteenth-brick, isolated power modules, a new generation of single-output dc-dc power converters derived from the Distributed-power Open Standards Alliance (DOSA) sixteenth-brick dc-dc converter footprint. Designed for optimum efficiency and power density, the KW Series converters are suitable for small-space, high-current and low-voltage applications in enterprise equipment; data processing equipment; access, wireless and optical network equipment; and distributed and hybrid power architectures.

Delivering up to 25 A of output current, the KW Series converters provide output voltages from 5 V to 1 Vdc, and an input-voltage range of 36 Vdc to 75 Vdc. The series incorporates synchronous rectification technology and innovative packaging techniques to achieve ultra-high efficiency reaching 91% at 3.3 V full load. The KW Series converters operate over the industrial temperature range of -40 °C to +85 °C. The modules are built around DOSA's industry-standard sixteenth-brick footprint of 1.30 in x 0.90 in x 0.335 in (33 mm x 22.9 mm x 8.50 mm), and are RoHS compliant (2002/95/EC).

The KW Series modules are available in surface-mount packages in both tape-and-reel and through-hole packages. Standard features include remote on/off (positive logic); output-voltage adjustment; remote-sense; and over-voltage, over-current and over-temperature protection (non-latching). Limited samples of the KW Series modules are available now and priced at $37.10 in 1,000-unit quantities.
