TI Introduces Flexible, High-Speed USB 2.0 "On-The-Go" Dual-Role Controller

March 25, 2008 by Jeff Shepard

Texas Instruments (TI) introduced a high-speed Universal Serial Bus (USB) 2.0 On-The-Go (OTG) dual-role controller that is said to provide flexible architecture to meet a multitude of customer-defined applications. It can operate either as a function controller for a USB peripheral or as the host/peripheral in point-to-point or multipoint communications. It is claimed that this low-power device’s idle mode operating at less than 100uA will extend battery life in consumer devices, such as mobile handsets, portable media players or video applications.

TI states that the TUSB6020 is a compact solution for space-conscious equipment and comes in the industry’s smallest 5 x 5mm package. It is certified to be compliant with the USB 2.0 OTG specification by the USB Implementer’s Forum to help ensure interoperability with other USB devices. Its integrated USB 2.0 PHY provides design flexibility with one-port operation at a low speed of 1.5 Mbps, full speed of 12 Mbps and high speed of 480 Mbps. The VLYNQ™ serial interface is said to allow seamless interface to any VLYNQ-enabled application processor without loading the GPMC or EMIF ports.

Other key features include the following: uses industry-standard Mentor Graphics USB 2.0 OTG core; supports session request protocol and host negotiation protocol; on-chip integrated 45Ω high-speed termination, 1.5kΩ pullup, and 15kΩ pulldown resistors; on-chip phase-locked loop to reduce noise on high-speed clocks; and protection circuitry to withstand possible VBUS short.

The TUSB6020 will add high-speed USB capability to any ™S320DM643x DaVinci™ technology-based product. Other USB devices from TI support PC and consumer electronics applications.

The TUSB6020 is available now in either an 80-pin TQFP package or MicroStar BGA/MicroStar Junior™ ZQE Package. Suggested resale pricing in 100-unit quantities is $7.50.
