Texas Instruments PT800/8120 SMT Power Converters

New Products Jun 02, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Texas Instruments Inc. (TI, Warrenville, IL) unveiled what is claimed to be the industry’s first surface-mountable, high-current, multi-phase, power converters, the PT8100 and PT8120, which are designed to provide low-voltage, high-current power solutions for the latest generation of multiprocessor and high-end computing applications, such as workstations, servers and other large systems that employ multiple microprocessors, DSPs, ASICs or FPGAs.

Operating at more than 90-percent conversion efficiency, over an operating temperature range of -40 to +85 degrees C, with a fast transient response of 15A/usec, the PT8100 and PT8120 are available with output voltages that are five-bit programmable from 3.5V to 0.8V, with versions available that are compatible with VRM specifications 8.4, 8.5 and 9.0. The PT8100 will operate from either a 3.3V or 5V input bus and provide 40A, while the PT8120 will operate from a 12V input bus and provide 30A.

The PT8100 and PT8120 are packaged in the space-saving, 31-pin, Excalibur case, which eliminates the need for an external heatsink. The converters include industry-standard protection features such short-circuit and over-temperature protection, output inhibit (on/off), remote sense, and soft-start.

The PT8100 and the PT8120 are available now in surface-mount, vertical through-hole or horizontal through-hole styles (3.5in x 1.5in x 0.5in). Pricing is $47.75 in quantities of 1,000.
