STMicroelectronics Intros ST890 P-Channel MOSFET

September 30, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

STMicroelectronics Inc. (Geneva, Switzerland) introduced its new ST890 p-channel MOSFET, which operates from 2.7V to 5.5V, making it suitable for use in both 3V and 5V systems. The SO-8 device acts as a power switch for USB and high-side, load-switching applications, and can also be used in PCMCIA and other access bus slots where cards are inserted and removed without turning the power off.

The ST890 features internal, programmable, current-limiting circuitry to protect against overload, and thermal overload protection to limit power dissipation and junction temperature. The maximum current is limited to 1.2A, and is programmed by a resistor placed between the MOSFET's set pin and ground. Other features of the ST890 include maximum quiescent currents of 25µA with the supply voltage on and 5µA when off, thermal shutdown, a fault indicator output, and a typical on-resistance of 90 milliohms.

The MOSFET is available with an operating junction temperature of 0 to 70 degrees C (C Series) and 40 to 85 degrees C (B Series).
