Smart-UPS line

December 12, 1999 by Jeff Shepard

American Power Conversion (APC, West Kingston, RI) recently announced enhancements to its Smart-UPS uninterruptible power supply (UPS) line with the introduction of a smaller (3.5 inches high) rack-mount model, the Smart-UPS 2U rack-mount UPS. APC claims that the Smart-UPS 2U unit offers feature enhancements at a lower price. The Smart-UPS 2U, available in 700VA, 1000VA and 1400VA, is designed to address the ever-increasing demand for rack-enabled solutions fueled by the explosive growth of data, voice and Internet traffic and the need to conserve precious rack space in datacenter environments. APC claims that the 1000VA and 1400VA models provide on average 35 percent more battery runtime than APC's existing rack-mount UPSs. It also provides a wider input voltage range which can maintain computer grade power even if the nominal voltage drops by 30 percent without the UPS switching to battery. APC has also simplified the battery removal and replacement process in all three VA models by integrating the batteries in a chassis tray with an easy accessible connector, enabling users to disconnect and replace the batteries without disturbing the connected load. The new Smart-UPS 2U will be available in North America in January 2000, in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America during the first quarter 2000, and Asia Pacific during the second quarter 2000. Estimated resale pricing of the 700VA, 1000VA and 1400VA is $499, $659, and $849, respectively.
