Power-One Unveils Fabless Strategy and New POL

April 23, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Power-One, Inc. announced a new silicon-based business model and a new family of dc-dc converters. To implement its new fabless semiconductor business strategy, the company announced a new division, Silicon Power Systems. Silicon Power Systems’ first product, the XP3015P, is also the first member of the new maXyz™ (pronounced max-sys) product line. This non-isolated point-of-load (POL) regulator integrates 22 power semiconductor and layout-critical passive components to provide 15A of output current from a 10mm x 12mm x 1.5mm high package.

Steve Goldman, Chairman and CEO, commented, "The XP3015P is a significant strategy shift for us that involves development of an advanced-technology power conversion product utilizing a fabless semiconductor business model. Power-One’s strong balance sheet and in-depth understanding of customers’ applications uniquely positions us to pursue this aggressive strategy to broaden our available market with intellectual property rich products such as the maXyz™ family."

Dave Hage, Corporate Executive Vice President added, "With this new product introduction, we have significantly expanded our reach. We now compete with semiconductor companies like International Rectifier and Philips Semiconductor, in addition to our competitors in the power supply industry."

The X3015P integrates all the required active components into an LGA package including a synchronous buck pwm controller, driver circuits and two low RDS(on) power FETs. These POL converters feature a programmable output voltage from 0.75V to 4.0V with an input voltage range of 3.0 to 6.0 Vdc.

Other features include remote sense, no minimum load requirement, output short circuit protection, remote on/off enable, programmable fixed frequency operation (between 300 to 500 kHz), and an efficiency of 95% for 3.3 Vdc outputs.

Mr. Goldman continued, "Our new semiconductor-like product catapults Power-One into a new market segment, the silicon-based power conversion and management arena. In this new arena, we will be operating in a fabless semiconductor business model with much more intellectual property and expanding our available market."

"This innovative maXyz™ product clearly shows how Power-One is 'Changing the Shape of Power,' which we’ve chosen as our new tagline for the company," he concluded.
