ON Semi Intros Current Mirror with Switch Controller and SENSEFET Power MOSFETs

August 17, 2011 by Jeff Shepard

ON Semiconductor is offering its new CAT2300 current mirror with switch controller. When combined with the company's NTMFS4833NS or NTMFS4854NS SENSEFET® Power MOSFET devices, the new device is intended to provide a compact, efficient solution for current monitoring.

According to ON Semiconductor, this combination of new devices enables system level power management in applications such as portable computers and networking equipment. Accurate current monitoring over the SENSEFET's entire operating range is enabled by exact control and matching of the SENSEFET's SENSE output with the KELVIN voltage leads by the CAT2300.

The CAT2300 is a single chip alternative to a discrete circuit approach, providing sensorless current measurement of 0.9V to 5V power supply rails. The device performs current monitoring to 70mA, and integrates logic level ON/OFF control of the power MOSFET and its own circuitry. Power consumption is virtually zero, according to ON Semiconductor, and current consumption is less than 1µA in shutdown mode. The device is housed in a low-profile 2mm x 3mm TDFN-8 package, with an operating temperature range of -40°C and 85°C.

ON Semiconductor's NTMFS4833NS and NTMFS4854NS are 30 V, N-Channel SENSEFET MOSFETs designed to provide lossless current sensing, and combine low on-resistance, low capacitance, and low gate charge to minimize conduction, driver and switching losses. The MOSFETs are rated at 26A and 24A, respectively.

The CAT2300 is offered in a Pb-free, RoHS-compliant TDFN-8 package, and is priced at $0.56 per unit in 3,000 unit quantities. The NTMFS4833NS and NTMFS4854NS are offered in a Pb-free, RoHS-compliant SO-8 Flat Lead package, and are priced between $0.87 - $1.60 per unit in 1,500 unit quantities.
