80W DC-DCs with 9V to 75V Input Range

February 15, 2019 by Scott McMahan

Vicor has added four dc-dc Converters housed in Package™ (ChiP) modules to its DCM™ family. The new 80W variants come in the 3623(36mm x 23mm) ChiP package and feature a power density of 1,032W/in3. A wide input voltage range of 9V to 75V is available with nominal output voltages of 12V, 24V, 28V, and 48V. The devices have a nominal input voltage of 42V.

The devices are suitable for a wide variety of defense and industrial applications that require tighter output voltage regulation. These applications include industrial controls, radar, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), ground vehicles, and transportation.

The DCM is a dc-dc converter module that offers a proven, faster power system design option than alternate discrete solutions. Like the company's other DCM variants, the new models are isolated, regulated dc-dc converters that operate from an unregulated, wide-range input to generate an isolated output. They utilize a high frequency, zero-voltage switching (ZVS) topology, and the company says that they consistently deliver high efficiency across their entire input voltage range.

M-Grade versions of the DCM ChiPs are available, which can operate at temperatures as low as -55°C. According to Vicor, downstream dc-dc products and modular DCM converters support efficient power distribution, providing superior power system performance and connectivity from a mixture of unregulated power sources to the point of load.

The new modules leverage the thermal and power density benefits of Vicor's ChiP packaging technology, and they can use flexible thermal management options with very low top- and bottom-side thermal impedances.

Thermally capable, ChiP-based power components let customers quickly and predictably achieve cost-effective power systems with previously unattainable system size, weight, and efficiency attributes. The DCM VIA module will also integrate EMI filtering, tight output voltage regulation, a secondary-referenced control interface, and flexible thermal management options while maintaining the fundamental design benefits of the conventional brick architecture.

The four dc-dc converters come with standard and enhanced Vout regulation.
