Monolithic Power Intros MP1542 Step-Up Converter

May 05, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Monolithic Power Systems Inc. (MPS, Los Gatos, CA), a semiconductor manufacturer, introduced its new MP1542 current-mode, step-up converter that uses a 2 A, 0.18 Ω internal switch to provide a highly efficient regulator with a fast response. The device is suitable for applications such as LCD displays, portable appliances and digital still and video cameras.

The MP1542 can operate at 700 kHz or 1.3 MHz, supporting easy filtering and low noise. An external compensation pin affords the user the flexibility to set loop dynamics, which allows the use of small, low-ESR ceramic output capacitors. A soft-start facility results in a low inrush current and can be programmed with an external capacitor. The MP1542 operates from an input voltage as low as 2.5 V and can provide a 12 V, 500 mA output from a 5 V supply at greater than 90% efficiency.

Protection features of the MP1542 include under-voltage lockout, current limiting and thermal overload protection. The MP1542 is available in a low-profile, eight-pin MSOP package, and operates over an ambient temperature range of -40 °C to +85 °C. The MP1542 is priced at $1.15 in 1,000-piece quantities.
