Maxim Integrated Products Debuts New MAX8758 IC

May 11, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Maxim Integrated Products Inc. (Sunnyvale, CA) debuted its new MAX8758 IC that includes a high-performance, step-up regulator; a high-speed operational amplifier; and a logic-controlled, high-voltage, switch-control block with programmable delay. Designed for TFT LCD applications, the MAX8758 features high output current of ±150 mA, a fast slew rate of 7.5 V/µs, a wide bandwidth of 12 MHz, and rail-to-rail inputs and outputs.

The step-up dc-dc regulator, featuring under-voltage lockout, soft-start and internal current limits, provides the regulated supply voltage for the panel source-driver ICs. The converter is a high-frequency (640 kHz/1.2 MHz) current-mode regulator with an integrated 14 V N-channel power MOSFET that allows the use of ultra-small inductors and ceramic capacitors. The current-mode control architecture provides fast transient response to pulsed loads, while the regulator achieves efficiencies over 90% by bootstrapping the supply rail of the internal gate driver from the step-up regulator output.

The MAX8758 is available in a 4 mm x 4 mm, 24-pin, TQFN package with a 0.8 mm maximum thickness for ultra-thin LCD panels. The device operates over the -40 °C to +85 °C temperature range. Prices start at $3.30 for quanities of 1,000 pieces and up. A pre-assembled MAX8758 evaluation kit is also available with recommended external components to help reduce design time.
