LTC Unveils New LTC3407 Buck Regulator

July 27, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Linear Technology Corp. (LTC, Milpitas, CA) announced the new LTC3407, a dual-output, high-efficiency, 1.5MHz, synchronous buck regulator, which delivers up to 600mA of continuous output current from two separate channels. Using a constant-frequency, current-mode architecture, the LTC3407 operates from an input-voltage range of 2.5V to 5.5V, making it suitable for single-cell, lithium-ion, multi-cell, alkaline or nickel-metal hydride battery applications.

The LTC3407 generates two independent output voltages as low as 0.6V, enabling it to power the latest generation of low-voltage DSPs and micro-controllers. The 1.5MHz switching frequency allows the utilization of tiny, low-cost ceramic capacitors and inductors less than 1.2mm in height. The LTC3407 uses internal switches to deliver efficiencies as high as 96%, and features low dropout, 100% duty-cycle operation to allow output voltages equal to VIN. No-load quiescent current is only 40µA, and <1µA in shutdown, and provides dual outputs of up to 600mA.

The LTC3407EMSE is available from stock in a thermally enhanced, MSOP-10 package. Pricing starts at $2.60 each for the LTC3407 in 1,000-piece quantities.
