Linear Unveils New Power Management IC

October 12, 2006 by Jeff Shepard

Linear Technology Corp. introduced the LTC2952, a versatile power management IC with push-button on/off control for system power and system monitoring features.

The power management function features two PowerPath™ controllers suitable for applications requiring a diode-OR function for load sharing or automatic switchover between two input power sources. The low loss switchover is achieved by regulating two external P-channel MOSFETs with 20mV typical voltage drop when conducting and is configurable to satisfy various application requirements. The push-button controller provides enable control for dc-dc converters, processor's interrupt logic and adjustable ON and OFF debounce times. When powering off, the LTC2952 interrupts the system processor to alert it to perform the necessary power down and housekeeping tasks, resulting in graceful system shutdown. The robust and accurate system supervisory functions of the LTC2952 make it ideal for high reliability system applications. The voltage monitoring, power-fail and watchdog reset functions enable further enhancement and ensure system integrity.

The LTC2952 operates over a wide input voltage range of 2.7 to 28V, effectively accommodating a wide variety of input power supplies. The device's functionality and reduced need for external components results in dramatically simplified power management with low overall system cost and a compact design solution. Specified over the commercial and industrial temperature ranges and available now, the LTC2952 is offered in 20-pin TSSOP and 4mm x 4mm QFN packages. Pricing for the LTC2952 begins at $2.95 each in 1,000-piece quantities.
